Reading On the Existence of Digital Objects, Part Two.

Discussion topics:

  • The Age of relation of the proliferation of intermediaries is related to two trends; one articulating Brain and Language (Neuro-Analytical Philosophy); the other articulating Technics and Society (STS, Latour). The book of Yuk Hui can be an attempt to articulate both since digital objects are framed in terms of logical and computational relations. However, there is also a consequence of the Age of Relation that is not fully developed in the book: the fact that it comes with a radical critic of the system of relations proponed by earlier Ages.

  • Yuk Hui’s focus on Relations to understand Digital Objects is thus both interesting (in theoretical  terms) & problematic (too empiric?)

  • The second chapter can be presented as a re-reading of the history of European philosophy from the angle of the concept of “Relation”.
  • This reading is both interesting and classic: the debate between Hume & Kant for example as a pivotal point of European modern Ph.“In this chapter, I propose to understand individuation by retrieving and reinterpreting the notion of relation through reading Heidegger and Simondon as well as to develop a genealogy from Aristotle through medieval philosophy, Leibniz, Hume, Kant, Husserl, and Russell to recent computational technologies.”
  • Relation in relation to digital objects is introduced by Kant’s space
  • The hard disk is a space and if it’s not our hard disk, it’s a remote computer one. The space of digital object is not “virtual”, it’s electronic, it consummates energy. “Today, data centers consume about 2% of electricity worldwide; that could rise to 8% of the global total by 2030”. So energy is the key?
  • History of Philosophy of Relations
    • Yuk Hui defines his concept of “interobjectivity” in relation to discursive relations – thus the whole Heidegger’s development seems to be vain?
    • But we can doubt that Erde and Göttlichen can be assimilated to “Objects”?
  • The central point of this chapter is that intersubjectivity as a means of cultural analysis can be supplemented by another pole: the study of interobjectivity through a systematic under-standing of relations and the process of materialization. A system cannot be established without the materialization of interobjectivity and without structures that render these relations coherent.
